APPEARANCE:
HISTORY:
Born to the warlord of Wallachia in the fifteenth century, Vlad III Dracula was doomed to a life of tragedy. Alongside his younger brother, Radu III the Beautiful, Vlad was deported to Turkey to act as a ransom so that his father would pay the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire his monthly tribute of one-thousand boys, which were to serve as soldiers in his ever-expanding army. Over the course of seven years, Vlad was tortured, brutalized, and even raped for his staunch defiance of Islamic custom and law; unspeakable atrocities which would forever burn within him an inhuman hatred for his father, his brother – who had volunteered to stay behind and take a place in the Sultan’s court upon their release – and ultimately the entirety of the Ottoman Empire. He swore vengeance upon every last one of them.
He would return to his homeland and usurp the Wallachian throne from his own father by slaying him in his sleep. Upon assuming the mantle of warlord, he vowed to eradicate all Ottoman influence within his realm, no matter the cost. He executed nobles who had been corrupted by Ottoman wealth, established highly strict trade laws, and ordered the destruction of every village that sympathized with the enemy cause. But it wouldn’t suffice; for the corruption in his country had stemmed far deeper than he had anticipated. Radical changes were brought about in Vlad’s quest to fortify Wallachia’s strength as a country: the poor, the sick, and the lame were all systematically purged from the land to ensure that they would no longer contribute their filth to his master plan of absolute order. All who opposed him were condemned to the stake.
But even that failed to suffice for the tyrant warlord. Believing himself to be at a severe disadvantage, he performed the unthinkable: he had sold his own soul in exchange for dark powers on an unfathomable level, trading away his very humanity to become a creature of the night: a vampire, condemned to forever feast on the blood of living things to sustain his own existence. It was here that rumors of his legendary barbarism and penchant for violence began to spread to the masses. Over time, rumor became legend, and legend became myth. Vlad III Dracula – the Lord Impaler – had become the son of the Devil himself.
Eventually, the Ottoman Empire wasted no time in launching a series of campaigns in the hopes of either slaying or ousting Vlad from the throne, but to no avail – he had the home terrain advantage, and made use of whatever tactics he could to ensure that the Ottomans were unable to use his own men and resources against him. It was after a series of ambushes conducted hours before the crack of dawn – an event which went recorded in history as the Night Attack – that the Sultan and his army of well over three-hundred thousand soldiers came to siege the Wallachian capital, only to discover that a forest of nearly thirty-thousand Turkish corpses, all of them mounted on stakes and posed to gruesome extremes. Horrified, the Sultan withdrew his troops and retreated.
In a twist of irony, the very people he sacrificed his humanity for saw Vlad for what he had now become: a bloodthirsty monster, thirst unquenchable, wrath incarnate. A coup was formed to eliminate him, and though the battle that resulted was long and violent, Vlad the Impaler was finally slain, his head removed from his shoulders. Betrayed by his own people and the God that he worshiped for forty-five years, his last thoughts were married solely to exacting his unholy vengeance upon the world for their treachery. Vlad III Dracula was once a man of virtue and justice, but it was his own unyielding faith in God and his people that cost him his humanity and his life. But no more.
The Impaler’s reign of terror has only just begun.
