they just keep coming back for more, you'd think Jehovah's witnesses "Finally, a bit of breathing space!" A deep sigh of relief soon escaped his mouth, arms stretching as far as they could physically go. Indeed, Daisuke Masamune found it harder and harder to take a break now that Death's weird gladiator games had picked up, largely due to the influx of new souls entering Asgard, but fortunately for him the competition was mostly cheap game compared to some of the older, more experienced spirits that wandered about. He didn't necessarily like tossing these newbies around like surplus grenades, but hey, someone's gotta learn the hard way, right?
Daisuke gyrated his neck slowly, waiting until several of his neck vertebrae let off a few, audible pops before he scoped out his surroundings, getting a feel for where he was currently situated. Halo Forest was always a good hiding spot when it came to outrunning some of the more eager (albeit less experienced) fighters looking to pick on the weak or the clueless. Maybe that was one of the benefits to being a blind swordsman – people immediately assumed he was a sorry excuse of a warrior, all under the pretense that he had no eyes to accompany his skills.
That was usually the last mistake those fools ever made.
"Wonder if this place has any grub..." Daisuke pondered to himself, sniffing the air as though he were a dog. If blindness had taught him anything, it was that his other senses were far more useful in the long term than sight ever could be. He could smell out the fragrance of ripe fruit from miles away, for starters! Okay, maybe not to that extent, but he was pretty damn good at figuring out which things were edible and which weren't by smell alone.
Unfortunately for him, nothing in close proximity seemed to enter his olfactory range as palatable, which caused him to sigh yet again; except he did so in lamentation rather than relief. "Jeez, it's been days since I've had a good meal..." Daisuke complained, wandering his way over towards a tree in order to slouch his entire body against its steadfast trunk, sinking towards the ground until he rested in a seated posture.
No worthy foes to fight, no Hacksilver to spend, and no good food to spend said nonexistent Hacksilver on. Tonight was gonna be a long night...

[googlefont="Mrs Saint Delafield:300"] SING WITH ME IF IT'S JUST FOR TODAY [attr="class","next"]Halo Forest. Lots of trees, some ferocious wildlife, some more trees, some plants, the occasional lost traveler, yet more trees. Yeah, this wasn't exactly Piper's area of choice. Though the fun levels were at an all time low, this place was a great spot to trap and hunt noobs for easy souls. Usually, that was. As she marched through the foliage today, she was finding out that the sucker population was at an all time low. Not a single confused wanderer, not a single helpless chump, and not even a single crazed monster! Ludicrous! Nevertheless, the short musician cheerful hummed the tune of Saint Saens's Fossiles as she walked. Her original pace was much faster and more organized, but now her hum was slightly off and tired, as were her steps. Just how long had she been walking, anyway? It seemed like a period with over fourteen phases, and it was starting to get to her. That, and the fact that she hadn't eaten anything for an entire two hours. This cycle of boredom and hunger triggered a thought in her head; does she even need to eat anymore? She was dead, she shouldn't have to, but she had been eating just as if she were alive since the day she materialized in this twisted afterlife. She guessed it was better to be safe than sorry, and her stomach obviously was still calling for her to stuff it with delicacies. The composer's eyes looked up to find a man resting by a tree, and in a natural instinctive move, she readied her fists as if the tiny things would actually be able to do anything at all to this warrior. Wait a minute; green hair, blindfold, she'd definitely seen this guy before. Didn't he live across the hall in the Elysium or something? That didn't necessarily mean anything; this guy could still easily want to kill her, but something about him made her lower her fists and adjust her hat instead, something that had fallen slightly lopsided during the course of her journey. Introducing somebody so grimly was simply not acceptable. With a wide grin and a perky tone to her voice, Piper piped up at the slouched character, " Wonderful to meet somebody like yourself way out here!" She ran her finger across the brim of her hat then put her hands to her sides, " I don't believe we've properly met; I'm the girl from across the hall, Piper Kalliope Rockefeller II!" She said her name with a slight German accent, something done on purpose to give her sentence more pizzazz. It was all about style, all about presentation, even the smallest of things. they just keep coming back for more, you'd think Jehovah's witnesses A chipper melody, foreign to him in its entirety, entered Daisuke's earshot range, which failed to illicit a response beyond simple curiosity. People actually wandered around the forest at this time of night? The blind swordsman grinned. Be they friend or foe, he'd greet this newcomer with both open arms and a steady hand. After all, there was no sense in getting all uptight or tense about everyone he stumbled across.
"Wonderful to meet somebody like yourself way out here!" That is, if she hadn't beat Daisuke to the punch beforehand. "I don't believe we've properly met; I'm the girl from across the hall, Piper Kalliope Rockefeller II!" Oh? She was stationed several rooms away from his at the Elysium Hotel? Funny how they hadn't run across each other until now; Daisuke could only imagine how old this chipper spirit was, given her youthful tone of voice and the sheer optimism that bubbled from each accent-caked syllable that escaped her lips.
"Masamune Daisuke," Daisuke answered back with a gentle, yet confident inflection to his own voice. As he was currently seated against the maple tree behind him, he bowed his head respectfully. "The honor is all mine, milady." With that, he pushed himself to his knees, and then to his feet proper. Although the white spaces where his eyes were situated appeared to be gazing in Piper's direction, they could not visually distinguish any part of her nor their forest surroundings– much like the ribbon-like mask had implied, he had sacrificed his sense of sight. But in return, he gained far more appreciation for the world and her people than he would have through vision alone.
"You sound very eager to roam the woods at this time of night, Miss Piper," Daisuke assumed, basing his premise entirely by the tone of her voice. He could have been wrong for all he knew – he usually was in these cases – but something about the way she spoke seemed to resonate pure confidence, the type that only a prodigy or a seasoned warrior would possess. "Are you traveling alone? Perhaps you would like a companion to spend the time with? I'm sure the both of us would appreciate the extra company." He smiled sincerely, but in a completely random direction. Awkward.

Night in this land. Much like night anywhere else but yet not. Like a looming specter descending across the otherworldly star that provided their sunlight was the cause of it. The night seemed to just happen suddenly. Very little build up and fanfare of sunset. Just a creeping darkness that quickly engulfed the world and made the place proper for those creeping things that loved the darkness. Too bad for such things that a beacon of light would be ready to meet them. That was, of course, if she could find them or even find her own way around this place. Azah had been wandering all day looking for something tainted to disintegrate yet they hid so well here. As if they were welcomed by the realm around her. They slid into the shadows without a trace. Yes, it would take some getting used to before she would be able to hunt as she was used to. The forest around her was not too terrible of a thing though, rather relaxing actually. A welcome change from the mad men that tried to kill each other constantly here. Azah's gleaming emerald eyes caught just such a scene as she was thinking about mad men. Two of them standing and.... wait.... they were talking. Perhaps some men here were more mad than others. Then again, what was mad in a place like this? These two weren't trying to gouge and tear each other apart. Maybe they were like her. True believers. If not, oh well. Nothing lost by them being poor victims in this world. If they were, excellent. An inquisitor always needed allies.
Azah crossed the open field from the path to the edge of the woods where the two were just staring to speak. Azah pulsed her wings outward making a feathery snapping sound. She hated having them folded up all the time. Wing cramps were nothing to laugh at. She could not fly here though. Something held her down. "Hail." she called to the two in the friendliest tone her deep and naturally commanding voice could offer. "I notice you two are not trying to kill each other. That is a welcome change of pace." Azah reached up and pulled her helmet from her head letting her hair messily spill out around her face and shoulders. Now that she was closer to them she was sure she knew these faces. At the very least she had seen them before. Azah thought she had placed after only a few seconds. "Do you both reside in the Elysium Hotel?" she asked casually resting her helmet on the long hilt of her sword so she no longer had to hold the heavy thing.

[googlefont="Mrs Saint Delafield:300"] SING WITH ME IF IT'S JUST FOR TODAY [attr="class","next"]There was something about this man that was off, though as soon as he stood up to face her, she quickly found out what that was. He was completely blind. Interesting, so like those old martial arts movies that they occasionally play in Cryptkeeper? "Well, you know what they say, positivity makes for positive results!" Piper said to the sightless samurai, who identified himself as Masamune Daisuke just a few seconds earlier.
"A company would be most appreciated, Daisuke, but I must warn you." How rude, she hadn't yet announced the reason why she was traveling through the forest at night in the first place. That certainly should have been one of the first things to be addressed! Though it might of been obvious given the currently circumstances of the game. "I've come to hunt the wilderness for souls, so that I may bec-" The short girl was quickly cut off by the sound of a sharp flapping noise. Oh wonderful, a harpy, or perhaps a gryphon! Exactly the type of prey she was seeking, and it had come right to her! What wonderful results, quick and timely, too, wait.
That wasn't a monster, that was a person. An angel to be exact, not exactly anything shocking or out of the ordinary in Asgard. They were actually an alien race like bird-people or something, Piper wasn't exactly sure, she didn't really care about xenobiology. Still, this was no good, Champion targets had more than one soul, which meant they could always come back to haunt you if you were to kill them. The composer gave the winged alien a condescending look as she introduced herself, showing different mannerism than she did to the samurai.
"Don't we all live in the hotel?" A sarcastic remark, but she said it with a completely serious face and tone. "It's Lady Death's rules, or something like that." She broke her poker face with a smile with the second sentence, she couldn't help to keep the glee in for any longer. So, what now, was this angel going to attack? People weren't typically nice in this realm. In fact, she only noted the samurai to make him an ally due to how near he was to her room, which would give him an excellent assassination opportunity. Honesty was skin-deep in this world.

they just keep coming back for more, you'd think Jehovah's witnesses Daisuke formed his lips into a closed smile upon hearing the younger woman's enthusiastic reply. Positivity makes for positive results, eh? Well, she certainly corroborated with his own world philosophies – but only that much was for certain. Unintentionally or otherwise, Piper Rockefeller II would continue on to spill her motives for wandering the Halo Forest: she, too, was another champion that slayed for souls in Death's name. More competition in her barbaric little tournament.
For now, the two of them were mutual allies traveling under the same banner – companionship, however fleeting it may be. In fact, some opposing armies were known to interact and play games with each other during times of ceasefire... or so Daisuke had read in a book somewhere. But at the end of the day, Piper was inevitably to be another body to add to the terminal death toll – a mere stain of red on the edge of his blade.
But before Piper could hand over details regarding her motives for participating, a third party soon found themselves barging into the scene with brilliant, outstretched wings and a suit of armor that glimmered with all the radiance of the honored sun goddess herself. A terse greeting came before the rather blatant observation that Daisuke and his new female companion weren't trying to rip each other's throats out. Followed by the awkward question as to whether or not they both lived in the Elysium.
Daisuke chuckled mildly after Piper beat him to the punch regarding the hotel question, then stepped forward and bowed politely, as per his national custom. "You must be one of those 'angels' that the Christians refer to as," he assumed with a lighthearted tone, unsure of what else to identify the winged beauty as. "Then it would appear that we are all residents of the Elysium Hotel. It seems that birds of a feather really do flock together."
The blind swordsman paused for a moment as a fruity aroma entered his range of smell. Such a powerful scent could only mean that whatever was nearby was ripe enough to eat. And given that it was in such close proximity, Daisuke could only speculate that this sweet-smelling thing was either on the ground, or hanging in a tree above him.
"Excuse me." He called out to the two ladies as he crouched to his knees, taking large whiffs of the air whilst he craned his head, hovering it about two feet above the ground as he did so. The smell grew weaker the closer to the dirt he got, so it was safe to conclude that his aromatic treasure was hanging proudly in a tree somewhere. From a small hole in his all-white trench coat, where the neck ended and the back began, the swordsman withdrew what looked to be a wooden practice sword, the same type used by students of kendo, the "way of the sword".
Gripping the shinai's hard, bamboo hilt with one hand, he lifted the weapon high into the air until its plastic-covered tip found its way into a cluster of branches and leaves. Daisuke then spent a couple of seconds fidgeting the "blade" around until he could feel himself stabbing at a thicker part of the branch. A few upward sniffs came before the satisfied grin emerged on his face. "I thought I'd find something here!" Daisuke declared, suddenly lowering the wooden sword so that he could grip the blade itself, resting his hand close to the guard, before dropping into a neutral stance.
Within five, remarkably timed seconds, Daisuke leaped upward and spun himself in a perfect circle, pulling as hard as he could on the sword's hilt until a literal blade of shimmering silver emerged from the wooden stick portion of it, cleanly slicing through the branches that held his sweet-smelling treats hostage. Upon landing, Daisuke flourished the newly-unsheathed sword so that he could break the fall of the fruit-bearing twig, shifting his body so that he could gently manipulate the sword until the branch could gently slide its way to the ground.
Without breaking pause, Daisuke skillfully twirled his weapon over his wrist a couple of times, maneuvering the slender hilt between his fingertips until he now held it in a reverse-handed grip, pulling the bamboo stick – revealed to be its protective scabbard – up so that he could quickly and neatly return the sword into its casing with a single, fluid motion. It was but a taste of his skill in the art of iaijutsu – a technique that few have learned and even fewer have mastered. While he himself was no master, Daisuke was formidable enough to immediately present himself as a bigger target to these other two fighters, altruistic and amicable as his current intentions may be, and regardless of how skilled they were.
He was not going to be trifled with.
Daisuke grinned in triumph, stooping low to snap off one of the richly colored fruits from the branch he had sliced off the tree above him. "Who wants a snack? I've been starving all afternoon, so I'm gonna help myself." And with that, he took a huge bite of the fruit's juicy flesh, relishing in its soft texture and its abundance of water. Strangely enough, it tasted very similar to cantaloupe. Cantaloupes sure were tasty.

For some reason today, Demise decided that he would skulk the forest to see if there was anything interesting there for him. Though rather than run around on the ground as if he were soem animal, he tookt he high ground in the trees where their leaves would shelter him from the view of most. Through most of his time in the forest, there was nothing interesting to be seen. Occasionally, the noises of nature would ring through, piercing his ears with their annoying sound. However what was he expecting to find in a forest? Though it seems as if by luck, or pity for his time spent out there all day, muffled sounds from a distance reached the ears of Demise. Though he could not make out what they were saying, it was definitely words coming from the other souls of Asgard. Upon following the sound, Demise spotted below him a small campsite with three people sitting around it. By the looks of these people, they were three different deviants sharing much different personalities from one another. Upon listening in slightly on their conversation, he noticed the one in heavy armor begin to speak. He found it rather odd that in a conversation in this world, the only interesting thing to be brought up would be whereabouts one lived in the Elysium. Though this was such a simpleminded question, they all were seeming to deal with it light hartedly. Deciding that there was no need to linger in hiding anymore, Demise jumped down from the tree, landing with ease on his feet. Rather than stand there and try to distill thhe little fear he could he thought he would introduce himself instead "I am the one referred to as Demise." he went to continue on "I am not here to break the peace, but rather to be a neutral ally until time for battle comes." Rather than waiting for the invitation, he decided to welcome himself into the group as he took a seat somewhere on the far side of them all, waiting to see what their response was to his arrival. |

Good, neither of them drew weapons and attacked. At the very least they hadn't proved to be just a duo looking to hunt down single targets. So far at least. Azah would keep her guard up for the time being. The tides of battle could turn at any moment. It was always a good idea to keep your wits about you when encountering new people. Especially in this realm.
The first one to speak to her was the woman in the strange hat. It looked like the helmet of some kind of militia or perhaps the regalia of a performer. It was very impractical and almost comical. Azah had never seen anything quite like it. She would have to ask her about it later once they had established some kind of report. For now though she would have to deal with the woman's veil sarcasm. Clearly this woman knew more about this place than she did. She seemed to think it was foolish that Azah did not know where everyone lived. Then again, she had only been here for under a week. The only thing she knew for sure about this place was there were mad people here and many of them needed to be destroyed. These two dd not need to be destroyed, at least not by nature. Perhaps they would need to be destroyed later if they proved inamiable. "Do all of the... Champions live there?" It was an honest question. She really didn't know. There seemed to be more people around than would fit in the hotel but she could be wrong. Magic was a wondrous thing. It also seemed that it was not polite in this world to introduce yourself. Azah would have to remember that. Though she had not introduced herself either. Maybe she needed to do that first and then other would follow suit. So many new rules to learn.
Next the young man spoke to her. He mentioned the Christians, whoever they were. She had heard them mentioned before since she arrived here. They served some kind of lord and apparently she looked like one of his angels. A description of her in the low tongue but still effective. Interesting she had never heard of this God before. "I assure you I am not refereed to by the Christians. I do not know why people seem to think I have something to do with them. I know nothing of them." Azah shrugged, her armor making a small clanking noise as she did so. It was only a second or two later that the man became some kind of dog. Not literally, but in spirit. Smelling the air and trying to locate something. The following display was an impressive bit of acrobatics and swordsmanship that literally yielded fruit. Azah looked at the fruit with her golden eys and nodded. Impolite to refuse a gift after all. "I will have one." she reached out and took the fruit from him. Though, she had never seen such a melon before. It was particularly hard shell but a soft flesh inside. Azah observed as the man dug into the fruit rather ravenously. The winged woman, far too dignified to do such a thing, merely held onto the melon. "My name is A-" She was cut off by a strange man landing near them and introducing himself as Demise. He also claimed that he was not there to break the peace. However, his appearance and manner told another story. His body spoke at a volume akin to the dark things that crawled in the night. Azah reached back and grasped her helmet from the hilt of her blade. She did not put it on just yet, only held it. "I am Azah Exaltel, Inquisitor and Hunter of Dark Things." She said, not taking her eyes off the newcomer. Her golden eyes narrowing at the pale skinned, large eyed man. She would assess him. See what he was.

they just keep coming back for more, you'd think Jehovah's witnesses Daisuke paused for a moment to swallow the mound of fruit pulp lodged between his cheeks with a huge gulp, lowering the near-hollowed out fruit to speak. "Forgive me for my assumptions, then. Your presence, your tone of voice, and even your aura carry with it a firmness of conviction and resolution that certainly reminds me of the angels I've heard about." he complimented with a string of words far more eloquent than his delinquent-like appearance implied. After the armored female opted to take up the other melon between her gloved hands, the blind samurai would return to his own, studying the two females as he took another bite.
One was perky and full of spunk, liveliness that only a young child would resonate; the other was ever-vigilant and austere, her very spirit reinforced by some unshakable faith in someone or something higher than herself. And just as he was about to move in and make introductions himself, a fourth party emerged from the shadows of the trees around them, claiming neutrality before literally moving to the sidelines in order to observe their actions as if he didn't just spontaneously barge his way in without warning. Great. There was Perky Piper, Azah the Austere, and... some other guy. Demise, or something.
He turned back to the gold-winged warrior, continuing to munch away at his slice of wild fruit. "Inquisitor? Hunter of Dark Things? I take it you are a specialist in creature extermination, then?" Daisuke queried as he finished off the last bits of his melon, tossing the fruit's hollowed shell to the ground so that he could move on to the second half. "I'm a rōnin myself. That is, a samurai with no master," he divulged, pausing to take a bite of fruit, then swallowing quickly to continue. "Used to serve the Shogun himself, even. But then some things happened, and then I got shot with a musket, and now I'm here." A half-assed shrug followed. "I don't usually prefer to dwell on the past."

[googlefont="Mrs Saint Delafield:300"] SING WITH ME IF IT'S JUST FOR TODAY [attr="class","next"]"I think I saw something waaaay better back there." The upbeat bard said in response to Daisuke's offering of fruit, promptly rejecting the cantaloupes. They were such bland fruit, and if she remembered right, there was a tree full of delicious green apples just a little ways from here. Piper stood up at this thought, deciding she would go off to try to find this tree and leave these two be. For now, anyway. "I'll be back!" She cheered before turning away and trotting off, vanishing in the brush.
After walking quite a bit, she realized that the apple tree was further away than she had initially realized. It would be great if she could fly or something, that was a spell she would definitely have to invest in later on. On top of the tree being nowhere in sight, it began to rain a few minutes ago, making the walking all the more miserable. It would be better just to turn back, the musician decided. She would simply just have to go hungry.
By the time the pink-haired composer returned to the "camp," however, she had noticed that yet another character had joined the scene. A dark fellow, something she didn't exactly like all that much. He seemed to bring tension to the air, pressure on the productive and optimistic vibes that she wished to fill the world with. Whatever. She disregarded this tension and decided to speak up, having of missed everything that was previously said due to being absent.
"Well, alright then; who are you?"

Though the amount of time he sat there in silence might have been awkward, he did catch a glimpse of another person in the area who ran off as he entered. Perhaps she was scared of so many newcomers?
As if to put this idea to rest before any others could arise she came running out into the open and seemed surprised by the arrival of Demise. Without leaving too much hesitation behind her, she simply asked who he was. What a shame she wasn't here a few seconds ago when he introduced himself to the mass there. Rather than show his displeasure with announcing himself a second time, he spoke up My name is Demise. Sorry if I alarmed you with my arrival." He took a moment before he spoke again "I was simply around the forest when I saw this group and decided to drop in to join the chat." At this point in time, he had no bad intentions, he was merely there to sit and enjoy before their time on the battlefield came. |

The first odd thing to transpire was the sudden vanishing of the woman who had been there when Azah arrived. She wanted to go find something else to eat rather than the strange melon that had been offered to her. Maybe she should not eat this thing. If the other woman thought it was bad enough to actively seek out something more edible than such a hard rind fruit. Never-the-less, she would not discard the fruit after she had accepted it.That would be rude.
Azah found it fit to answer what the man said first. "They may be describing me well but I do not think they refer to me or my kind specifically. While the description seems accurate I think it may be mainly correlation." it was interesting though. Maybe she should find these Christians and ask them about how they have such accurate descriptions of a people that, as far as she knew, they had never met. No mention of that group was in the Anokian histories. Perhaps it was a rogue group that made contact with these humans. A group cast out for one reason or another. She did know of a great many sects that had been cast out for some strange belief. They were forced to make their way in the blackness of the void and fend for them selves. Perhaps it was a group such as that that made contact the humans called Christians. It was then troubling to think that this group may have altered the human's evolutionary path. Too little too late however, she was dead now and could not inform the council of what she knew. Too bad.
"Yes, I do in fact hunt monsters. Monsters of all kinds. Anything that hides from the glory of righteous light should fear my visage. I take special care to make sure every creeping thing I meet is left in a smoldering pile of consecrated ash." Azah shot Demise a particularly venomous glance as she finished her detailed description of what exactly would happen to him if he so much as blinked wrong. She was not yet sure about his nature but Azah had a gut feeling and she was trained to trust those instincts."No master?" Azah mused, "That means little. As long as you have a cause you need not fret about titles and master-ship." Azah punctuated her statement with a nod. She had been something like that at the end of her life. While she still served the ideals of the counsel they had revoked her status as an inquisitor, forced retirement. It was that exact retirement that led to her demise. One last great hunt before they took away her ability to do the one thing she was good at. Who would have thought she would get a second chance so soon after death. "So then, Demise." her tone was full of venom and scathing judgement, "What do you do? Hunt monsters? Or perhaps you find monstrous company preferable to that of the light of day?"
